What Does Car Overspray Look and Feel Like?
Overspray may appear as fine paint spots, a dull haze, or a rough texture you can feel when you lightly run a clean hand over the surface. Depending on the source and direction of the contamination, it can affect the paint, windows, mirrors, trims, or wheels.
Common signs include:
- Gritty texture
- Tiny speckles
- Dull haze
- Cloudy glass
- Rough patches
- One-sided contamination
Paint overspray removal from car surfaces is not the same as a normal wash. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s worth having the vehicle assessed before the contamination has time to bond more aggressively to the clear coat.

Honestly so happy with how my car turned out. The carpets had been absolutely soaked for ages and mould had started growing through the interior, plus it smelled horrible, so I was extremely stressed about whether it could even be saved properly. He spent hours on it and really took his time getting everything as clean and dry as possible. The difference is massive and it smells SO much better now. He was really nice and easy to deal with, booked me in the day after I got in contact AND there’s also a warranty where they’ll come back if the mould returns, which made me feel a lot better about getting it done. I’ve added before and after photos because they honestly speak for themselves. I finally feel like I have my car back 😭 Would definitely recommend!Posted on Google![]()

Types of Vehicle Overspray We Treat
Different overspray affects automotive paint differently. The right removal method depends on the contaminant, how long it has been on the surface, and the condition of the paint underneath.
House Paint Overspray
Neighbourhood painting jobs often leave fine droplets on parked vehicles, and wind can carry them surprisingly far. Latex and oil-based coatings dry hard on the clear coat. Our car paint overspray removal process lifts these deposits safely, using methods matched to the paint type, so your original finish stays intact.
Concrete & Cement Overspray
Splashes from mixers, trucks, and building sites dry into a chalky, abrasive crust. Left untreated, the alkaline content can etch paint and glass. We handle concrete overspray removal from car panels and windows with controlled softening, while our cement overspray removal service protects the surface beneath the residue.
Road-Line or Traffic Paint
Freshly marked roads throw fast-drying paint onto wheel arches, lower panels, and bumpers, where it bonds firmly. Our road paint overspray removal targets these stubborn speckles without harsh scrubbing. We dissolve the contamination gradually, so the surrounding paint remains smooth, glossy, and free from scratches.
Industrial Overspray
Factories, workshops, and spray facilities can release airborne coatings that settle across entire vehicles. These particles are often fine, widespread, and chemically tougher than domestic paint. Our industrial overspray removal service assesses the contaminant first, then clears it in stages, restoring a clean, smooth finish across every panel.

Send Photos for an Overspray Assessment
The fastest way to get an accurate assessment and quote is to send clear photos of the affected areas. Photos help us understand the extent of the contamination, the surfaces involved, and the likely treatment approach before you commit to anything.
What to Send
- Your name and phone number
- Your Melbourne suburb
- Vehicle make, model and colour
- The contaminant or cause, if known
- When the contamination occurred
- Which panels, windows and trims are affected
- Four to six clear photos, including close-up and full-vehicle views
- Whether a builder, painter, workplace or insurer is involved
Photo Tips
- Take photos in good natural light where possible
- Include one wide shot showing the full vehicle
- Include close-ups of the worst affected areas
- Photograph any contamination on glass, trim or wheels separately
- Avoid blurry or dark images that make assessment difficult
Once we receive your photos, we can provide an initial assessment and outline the next steps.
Our Car Overspray Removal Process
We follow a careful, step-by-step approach to car overspray removal. Every vehicle is different, so we choose the right method after an inspection and a test spot.
Step 1: Photo Assessment: You send vehicle details, location and clear close-up and wide-angle photos. This helps us understand the scope of the job before you book.
Step 2: Inspection and Test Spot: We check the contaminant, paint condition and affected surfaces before selecting a method. A test spot is performed to confirm the safest approach for your vehicle’s specific situation.
Step 3: Wash and Preparation: We remove loose dirt and surface grime so we can safely assess the contaminated surface. This step also prevents dirt from being dragged across the paint during treatment.
Step 4: Surface-Specific Removal: A suitable combination of decontamination, clay treatment or other confirmed methods is used to remove the overspray. The method is chosen based on the contaminant type and the condition of the surface underneath.
Step 5: Polishing Where Required: Machine polishing may be recommended to improve marring, haze or remaining surface defects after the overspray has been removed. We assess this step on a case-by-case basis. Where machine polishing is needed, we can carry out the work as part of a cut and polish service.
Step 6: Final Inspection and Protection: We inspect the finish with you and apply confirmed protection where included. Any limitations are explained before you take the vehicle home.

Audi Concrete and Paint Overspray Removal in Melton
The Problem
Situation
A builder's Audi was left parked at one of his active construction sites in Melton for several days after the vehicle developed a mechanical fault that prevented it from being moved straight away. Over that period, airborne concrete dust and paint overspray settled across the bodywork and began bonding to the paint, glass and trim. Once the owner realised that a normal wash was not shifting the rough contamination, he got in touch with Ted Car Detailing to arrange a proper assessment. The car was taken to Point Cook, where the full restoration was completed.
Inspection
Assessment
The Audi was inspected in Point Cook, with close checks across the bonnet, guards, doors, glass, mirrors and plastics. Fine concrete residue and paint overspray dots were spread across multiple exterior surfaces, with the contamination firmly bonded to the clear coat. A small test area was treated first to confirm the safest method before addressing the full vehicle. The owner was told that decontamination would lift the bonded contamination, but a cut and polish would also be needed to restore clarity and gloss to the affected panels.
Restoration
Treatment
The work started with a safe exterior wash to clear loose dirt before any contact with the bonded residue. We then clay-bar-decontaminated the affected panels and glass, using additional controlled decontamination on heavier areas. We checked each panel as we progressed to avoid unnecessary abrasion. After decontamination, we cut and polished to refine the finish, reduce visible imperfections, and prepare a clean, corrected surface. Once the paint was fully corrected, the owner chose to add a 7-year ceramic coating for long-term gloss and protection.

Result
The bonded concrete and paint overspray were removed, restoring the Audi's paint clarity and gloss. The owner was happy with the corrected finish and chose the 7-year ceramic coating as a post-restoration upgrade. The contamination occurred at the Melton construction site, while we completed the full restoration in Point Cook.

How Client Reviewed Our Service
Overspray Removal
Can All Overspray Be Completely Removed?
Many overspray deposits can be removed or significantly improved, but the result depends on the contaminant, how long it has been present and the condition of the underlying surface. Older concrete or chemical contamination may have already etched the clear coat. Repainted panels, failing clear coat, textured plastic, rubber, wraps, paint-protection film and ceramic coatings can also respond differently. We inspect the vehicle and complete a test spot before confirming the recommended treatment and likely result.
Factors That Affect the Outcome
Type of contaminant
Some materials bond more aggressively than others.
Age of contamination
Fresh overspray is generally easier to remove than older, cured deposits.
Surface condition
Existing paint defects, scratches or failing clear coat can limit the achievable result.
Surface type
Paint, glass, textured plastic, rubber and trim all respond differently to treatment.
Previous repairs or coatings
Repainted panels, ceramic coatings, PPF and wraps may require separate assessment.

FAQS
Overspray removal cost depends on the affected area, vehicle size, the type and age of the contamination, the surfaces involved, and whether polishing or protection is required.
Many deposits can be removed or significantly improved, but the final result depends on the age of the contamination, the type of contaminant and the condition of the underlying surface.
We select the method after inspection and a test spot to minimise risk. No process can guarantee zero risk, especially on surfaces with existing defects, but we take every precaution to protect your paint.
Concrete and cement overspray can often be treated, but we should assess it first because alkaline material can mark or etch surfaces. The results depend on how long the contamination has been present.
Overspray removal from car windows can often be treated successfully. Textured plastic, rubber, and trim may have limitations because these surfaces can be harder to treat without causing damage. We assess each surface individually.
Time depends on the area affected and the severity of the contamination.
Yes, we provide mobile overspray removal across Melbourne. Generally, small overspray spots take 1–2 hours, moderate overspray takes 3–5 hours, and severe or heavy industrial overspray takes a full day or longer.
Send full-vehicle, close-up and affected-surface photos, plus your vehicle make and model, suburb, when the contamination occurred, and what caused it if known.
These surfaces need separate assessment and may require repair or reapplication after overspray removal. Let us know about any coatings or films when you send your enquiry.
